It is required that the pre-course assessment be completed prior to attending the Instructor Course. The assessment may be conducted at any Range session and should be scheduled in advance.

PRE-COURSE ASSESSMENT

Venue – Classroom/Range

  • Safely load and unload all available demonstration firearms, covering at least:
  • Double-action Revolver
  • Semi-automatic Pistol
  • Complete rifle shooting exercises as follows:
  • Two-handed Standing Position
  • One-handed Standing Position
  • Two-handed Standing Position different action type
  • All shots must hit target

At the conclusion of this lesson instructor candidates will be able to:

  • State the goal of the NRA Basic Personal Protection In The Home Course
  • Describe the Structure of the NRA Basic Personal Protection In The Home Course Outline and Lesson Plans
  • Explain NRA policies on safety procedures, course length, required materials, and teaching methods to be followed when conducting an NRA Basic Personal Protection In The Home Course
  • Outline the content of the NRA Basic Personal Protection In The Home Course

Teaching Personal Protection Lesson I: Introduction to Defensive Shooting

At the conclusion of this lesson instructor candidates will be able to:

  • Explain the Importance of developing the proper mindset for using a firearm for Personal Protection In The Home

At the conclusion of this lesson instructor candidates will be able to:

  • Conduct a range safety briefing
  • Explain and demonstrate all live fire exercises
  • Supervise the safe conduct of all live fire exercises

LESSON NINE (30 min)

Teaching Personal Protection Lesson III: Firearms and the Law, Possession, Ownership and the Use of Deadly Force

At the conclusion of this lesson instructor candidates will be able to:

  • Identify persons authorized to conduct Lesson III of NRA Personal Protection In The Home Course
  • Determine what material to provide a guest instructor

LESSON TEN (60 min) - Classroom

Teaching Personal Protection Lesson IV: Strategies for Home Safety and Responding to a Violent Confrontation

At the conclusion of this lesson instructor candidates will be able to:

  • Conduct lesson IV of NRA Personal Protection In The Home Course
  • Explain Strategies and methods to enhance personal safety at home and in public
  • Describe strategies for responding to potentially life threatening encounter.
  • Explain the Importance of mentally preparing for the aftermath of a violent confrontation

LESSON ELEVEN (40 min)

Teaching Personal Protection Lesson V: Selecting a Handgun for Self-Defense

At the conclusion of this lesson instructor candidates will be able to:

  • Conduct Lesson V of the NRA Basic Personal Protection In The Home Course
  • Identify the criteria for selecting a pistol and ammunition suited to individual self-defense needs
  • Identify the major cartridge designs available for practice and Personal Protection In The Home, and explain the use, advantages, and disadvantages of each type

Teaching Personal Protection Lesson VI: Sports Shooting Activities and Training Opportunities

At the conclusion of this lesson instructor candidates will be able to:

  • Conduct Lesson VI of the NRA Personal Protection In The Home Course
  • Identify organizations, associations clubs, and businesses that may help your students hone, enhance, and expand their Personal Protection In The Home skills
  • Explain methods and precautions for dry-fire practice

LESSON THIRTEEN (90 min) - Classroom

Teaching Personal Protection Lesson VII: Course Review and Examination

At the conclusion of this portion instructor candidates will be able to:

  • Explain the role of the examination in the training process
  • Explain the roleof student evaluations in instructor development
  • Explain the importance recognizing students upon successful completion ofa studenttraining course
  • Take instructor certification test: Score of 90% required for full certification
  • Applying to the NRA for certification as a pistol instructor
